WELCOME TO the word community church at gen house

We’re caring for the families of our students by preaching God’s Word and sharing its principles for practical living.

HELP US BUILD OUR CHURCH→

Welcome to our new church plant at Gen House called The Word Community Church (TWCC)! If you know our village, and have read our mission, “...to provide Christian education for community transformation”, then you know this is the best way to reach every neighbor in our community, not just the students at our school.

Our remote village is a 45-minute driving distance to churches in Gulu Town in which many of our neighbors do not own cars and would have to walk extremely far distances to reach them. That directly affects their engagement with the Bible, sitting under the teaching of God’s Word, and applying its wisdom to their everyday lives.

We were pleased to fill the gap in this way: Meeting the spiritual needs of our community.

Headed by preacher and Co-Founder, Ocen, our church began humbly and passionately under a blackberry tree in our village. Today, this church serves both the children at our school opening in February 2023, their families, and the community at large!

Since officially launching on March 14, 2021, we regularly hold Sunday services, mid-week Bible studies, youth discipleship classes, and children’s church. We also have open-air preaching in our village’s marketplace center, trauma counseling trainings, discipleship with neighbors and families, and walk from home-to-home for door-to-door evangelism.

We are eager to serve the spiritual and tangible needs of our village, and have already witnessed God meet them through the presence of The Word Community Church!

Hope is growing in our community because of The Word Community Church.

GATHERING EVERY SUNDAY & WEDNESDAY

Each week, we intentionally make the Gospel accessible to our neighbors through the preaching and teaching of God’s Word. We meet regularly for Sunday service and mid-week Bible study on Wednesdays. These days are special to us and our church family because it allows most of our congregation that are illiterate to hear the truths of God’s Word spoken in the local, Acholi language, and to interact with it through questions and discussion at Bible study.

We also use this time to emphasize sound doctrine and apologetics so that our members can walk away with a solid understanding of the Gospel that can be shared in their homes and throughout the entire village.

OFFERING BIBLE-BASED TRAUMA COUNSELING, DISCIPLESHIP & HOSTING HOME FELLOWSHIP

We can’t forget what happened here. For over 20 years, the LRA War terrorized Northern Uganda, home to Acholi people, including the village we serve in. Our community was a war zone and our neighbors that survived it are still hurting today. Though the insurgency is over and peace is relatively present, there is still much turmoil in its aftermath.

Thankfully, we are able to host an annual, week-long, trauma healing trainings which address topics that were endured during the war and still today. This Bible-based counseling includes topics like rape, alcoholism, domestic violence, HIV/AIDS, and how to help suffering children.

Additionally, we host youth discipleship weekly and work with the teens to implement daily practices to improve their everyday living. After services on Sundays, we also gather as a church body and fellowship in the homes of our congregants to remind ourselves of God’s omnipresence in both joy and pain.

TRAINING UP CHILDREN AND YOUTH EACH WEEK

The children and youth at The Word Community Church are some of the most vibrant church members we have! Each week, they come in great numbers to hear the preaching and teaching of God’s Word, and to have great fun doing it! Co-Founder, Jordan is the regular, weekly children’s church teacher who leads translated lessons alongside local teachers, Proscovia and Babra.

The children are always giddy and eager to learn about God, and their curious minds love hearing Bible stories that they would not have known otherwise due to lack of access. The youth are also exposed to the Gospel in this way through their weekly discipleship class which allows them to study God’s Word in depth and ask questions to better understand their faith.

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
— John 1:14
